1816 Routh Street Dallas, TX 75201 (214) 922-0000

Founded by freed slaves from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, St. Paul United Methodist Church’s congregation dates back to 1873. The current structure’s construction was started in 1901, based on designs by Texas’ first African American architect William Sidney Pittman, and was ultimately completed in 1925. Today, the renovated St. Paul United Methodist Church is at the center of the downtown arts district, right across from the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. The church hosts regular music events, including a jazz night, and has a permanent display of archeological items excavated by University of Texas students and other items that tell the story of the church and Dallas’ Freedmen’s Town.
