South Llano River State Park
Pecos Trail Region
South Llano River State Park, nestled in the western Hill Country, is in a region that was actively secured by Buffalo Soldiers, especially the 9th Cavalry, during the late 19th century. Riding out from posts like Fort McKavett and Fort Concho, these soldiers patrolled the rugged Llano River valleys to protect settlers from raids, keep mail routes safe, and establish a military presence. Today you can enjoy the river, bird watch, learn about ranching heritage or camp under the stars in this International Dark Sky Park.
