Historic Shelby County Courthouse
Forest Trail Region
100 Historic Courthouse Sq.
Center, Texas 75935
The Shelby County Courthouse in Center, Texas was designed by architect J.J.E. Gibson in a Romanesque Revival design. It was completed in 1885. Gibson, hailing from Ireland, wanted his masterpiece to look like the castles he had seen while growing up in his native country. This courthouse is now the only remaining Irish castle style courthouse in the United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
While the county conducts the majority of its business in a more modern courthouse, the historic courthouse is home to the Shelby County Veterans Office and is open for tours.
