San Angelo State Park sits near historic Fort Concho, an important West Texas army post. Buffalo Soldiers, mainly the 10th U.S. Cavalry ("The Fighting Tenth") and troops from the 24th and 25th Infantry, were based there for long stretches in the late 19th century. From Fort Concho, they launched campaigns against Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache groups, rode countless miles on patrol, guarded mail routes, explored and mapped the area, and were key to the region's settlement. When you visit San Angelo State Park and explore along the Concho River, or tour the wonderfully preserved Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, you're on land directly tied to one of the most significant Buffalo Soldier posts.
