Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site
Sam Rayburn was the legendary Texas statesman who served in Congress for a whopping 48 years - including 17 years as Speaker of the House. His career spanned eight presidential administrations - from Woodrow Wilson to JFK.
He remains the longest-serving member Congress from Texas - and participated in the passage of most of the significant legislation of the first half of the 20th century.
Rayburn represented a new breed of Texan, who came of age during the Great War. They saw themselves as Americans rather than “Southerners” - and helped bring Texas into the American mainstream.
Here at the Sam Rayburn House, visitors can step into the warm and welcoming world of one of the 20th century’s most powerful and influential politicians, known to his friends as “Mr. Sam”.
