Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site
This is the home of legendary Texan Sam Bell Maxey. But less well-known are the remarkable contributions made during World War I by another family member who once lived here: Maxey’s great-nephew Sam Bell Maxey Long.
Too old to fight when war broke out, Sam Long passionately supported American troops by raising money for the local division of American Red Cross, of which he became chairman. In the Paris Morning News on August 29, 1917, he wrote “An Appeal to Patriotism”:
“To the American Red Cross has been given the privilege of furnishing hospital supplies and garments for our troops and for the troops of our Allies, of giving aid and assistance to the sick, suffering and starving...”
Long implored citizens to do their part, telling them to “give to the limit of your giving”.
