The Presidio La Bahía is an outstanding example of Spanish military architecture. Built in in 1749 to protect the Spanish missions in South Texas, including the nearby Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zuñiga, the Presidio served the people of four independent countries: Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the United States. The most famous event associated with the Presidio is the tragic Goliad Massacre of 1836.
A massive reconstruction of the compound took place in the 1960s. Today, visitors can enter the fort and feel as though they’re traveling back in time to the era of the Texas Revolution.
