America had won the war – but it faced another challenge immediately after: how do you integrate millions of soldiers, many suffering from physical and emotional trauma, back into a peacetime economy?
The US government established a rehabilitation and job training program to help these returning soldiers. Approximately 1,000 Texas veterans took part. While many colleges and universities throughout Texas were selected to participate in the program, Prairie View A&M was the only one available to African American veterans.
Today, Prairie View A&M continues its tradition as a historically black university – and the second-oldest institution of higher learning in Texas.
