The area around Possum Kingdom State Park, on the Brazos River in North Texas, was a hot zone for Buffalo Soldiers in the late 19th century. Troopers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry, based at Fort Richardson and Fort Griffin, patrolled the Brazos River valley, clashing with Comanche and Kiowa raiding parties and protecting the growing line of settlements and important cattle trails. Although the lake came much later, its scenic shores and canyons connect you to the land these soldiers crossed during intense frontier conflict. Grab your family, fishing pole, and swimsuit and head for the clear blue water and striking scenery at Possum Kingdom State Park.
