African American soldiers serving on the frontier in the late 1800s were called “buffalo soldiers” by Plains Indians. The name became common when referring to segregated troops of black soldiers through the end of World War II. Today, the name lives as a term of respect in museums and living history re-enactment groups. Play the audio track to learn more about buffalo soldiers on the Texas frontier.

A former stone jail, the Old Mobeetie Jail Museum in Wheeler County is the setting for exhibits chronicling the lives of American Indians, buffalo hunters, soldiers, and settlers vying to dominate the West. A mock frontier town surrounds the old jail.
