National Museum of the Pacific War
Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz — one of the 20th century’s top military minds — was born here to a family of German immigrants. Chester Nimitz’s grandfather, Charles Nimitz, arrived in the US in 1844 and was one of the founders of Fredericksburg. Charles opened the Nimitz Hotel, located in Fredericksburg’s downtown and young Chester was happy to call the hotel home.
As the US entered WWI, anti-German sentiment swept the nation, and the citizens of Fredericksburg were not immune. Despite the anxieties palpable on the WWI home front, Chester Nimitz left Fredericksburg to serve the nation in the Navy Submarine Force.
Today, the grand success of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz’s career is recounted at the National Museum of the Pacific War in world-class exhibits and thrilling battle reenactments. The museum is housed within and on the grounds of the Nimitz Hotel — the childhood home of Fredericksburg’s most famous son.
