Archeological evidence from across Texas indicates that most areas, including the Panhandle, were utilized by humans for more than 10,000 years. Many excavations reveal seasonal activities of hunter-gatherer populations, but the stone ruins found along the banks of Wolf Creek indicate the Canadian River watershed proved ideal for Plains Village settlement between A.D. 1200 and 1400.

Exhibits at the Museum of the Plains detail the archeological discoveries made over the last few decades in the “Buried City,” an ancient, semi-subterranean American Indian community. Ten thousand artifacts chronicle local cultural heritage.
