Mission Tejas State Park
Mission Tejas State Park is on the path of the El Camino Real de los Tejas, a historic trail that linked the Spanish missions, and, in the late 19th century, was a vital military and civilian route. Buffalo Soldiers followed this historic road as they traveled between posts, escorted personnel and supplies, or headed home after their enlistment. Today, the park's main feature is the commemorative representation, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, of Mission San Francisco de los Tejas, the first Spanish mission in Texas. Visitors can also see a historic log cabin, which was originally built in 1828 by the Rice Family, near a section of El Camino Real in this area. In 1973, the Rice family donated the old log home to the State of Texas, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department moved the historic structure to its present location at Mission Tejas State Park. You can also enjoy hiking on the various trails, fishing, and attending interpretive programs that highlight pioneer skills and the area's history.
