This stadium, home to the famed Texas Longhorns football team, is also a monument to Texan veterans of the Great War.

Built in 1924, 10,000 students and alumni donated money for its construction, whose campaign rally was “For Texas, I Will!” It was a symbol of state pride and sacrifice. Chairman of the Board H.J. Stark called it “a concrete emblem of beauty standing out there on the hill, commemorative of the deeds of valor by Texas heroes.”

At the dedication - held before a game against archrival Texas A&M - a moving ceremony honored the 198,520 Texans who served in World War I. Today, bronze plaques to deceased Texas soldiers adorn the stadium. A statue of “Democracy” stands above the north end zone seats.

In 1977, Memorial Stadium was rededicated to American veterans of all wars.
