Market Square Historic District
Market Square is Houston’s original town center. The town’s founders, the Allen Brothers, first landed at a bend in the Buffalo Bayou, just a stone’s throw from this spot in 1836 – the same year Texas gained its independence. It’s now a visitor site called Allen’s Landing. Market Square was home to Houston’s town hall (four of them, as each one burned in separate fires) for 100 years. It also hosted a thriving open air produce and fish market. Today it’s a vibrant and historic square surrounded by restaurants and businesses, and crowned with the lovely Market Square Park.
