Hill Country Trail Region
While the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site primarily tells the story of LBJ's youth, and the cultures that influenced his childhood, the surrounding Hill Country and nearby historic frontier routes were home to Buffalo Soldier activity in the late 19th century. The 9th Cavalry, operating from nearby posts like Fort Martin Scott and Camp Verde, patrolled the Pedernales River Valley and contributed to the overall security of the developing Hill Country. Their presence created the stability that later allowed for the growth and prosperity of communities like those near the ranch. When you visit the park and historic site today, consider the earlier efforts of the soldiers who laid some of the groundwork for the region’s future.
