German settlers from Fredericksburg founded Loyal Valley around 1858. In 1869, John O. Meusebach – founder of Fredericksburg – moved to Loyal Valley himself, laying out the town, operating a shop and nursery, and later serving as postmaster and justice of the peace. There’s not much to see in town today, except for a historical marker in the Loyal Valley Cemetery off House Mountain Road, which commemorates Herman and Willie Lehmann. The landscape is quite dramatic, however, including nearby House Mountain – which features a cave formerly inhabited by American Indians.
