Lockhart State Park, located in the heart of Central Texas, is nestled in an area that saw significant traffic on both the El Camino Real de los Tejas and the Old Spanish Trail. These two historic routes converged in the region, forming a vital corridor for military and civilian travel. The presence of Buffalo Soldier regiments, particularly the 9th Cavalry, was crucial for maintaining civil order during the Reconstruction era. These soldiers upheld federal law, protecting the rights of all citizens and ensuring peace across the state. Lockhart State Park has a number of historic facilities: a nine-hole golf course built by the Works Progress Administration (the only golf course in the Texas State Parks system) and several structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The park also offers hiking and a swimming pool.
