Lipantitlán State Historic Site in Nueces County marks the location of a small Mexican fort built in 1831 and surrendered to Texian forces in 1835. Although its military role was brief, the site lies near historic travel routes that later supported frontier movement. After the Civil War, Buffalo Soldiers serving across South Texas traveled through or near this area along roads connecting inland forts to Gulf Coast ports. Their presence reflects a later chapter in the region’s history, contrasting with its earlier ties to Mexican military control and Anglo settlement.
