For John Ross, captain of the steamboat “Yellow Stone”, that day in 1836 began like any other. But soon it turned into an unforgettable adventure – when General Sam Houston ordered him to ferry his Texian Army across the river, under heavy fire from the Mexican Army snipers. And that little boat helped win Texas independence.

Today, the Liendo Plantation provides views of the Brazos River and the surrounding landscape, allowing visitors to imagine the Texian Army aboard the Yellow Stone evading Mexican troops and riflemen. The plantation is also home to a Greek Revival style plantation home that hosts live Civil War history events.
