Comal Springs is the largest group of natural springs in Texas. Artifacts from American Indian and Spanish missionary settlements have been found at the site. In 1859, Joseph Landa bought this land and used the Comal River to power grist mills, cotton and wool factories, an ice plant, and a brewery. By the twentieth century, it supported a hydroelectric plant. The Comal Power Plant, located at the entrance to Landa Park, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the area operates as 196-acre Landa Park with a lake, a spring-fed pool, extensive playground facilities, and a miniature railroad. A registered arboretum with approximately 96 species of trees identified, the site features the Henry Landa Tree Trail and the Panther Canyon Nature Trail.
