Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway
Lake Somerville State Park sits near the paths of both the Old Spanish Trail and El Camino Real de los Tejas, which provided routes westward for settlers in the late 19th century. Buffalo Soldiers traveled these routes, using the trails when moving between posts, escorting supplies and personnel, or traveling on leave. Lake Somerville State Park immerses visitors in this wild landscape. The park’s two units—Birch Creek and Nails Creek—are connected by a 13-mile trailway for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. The trailway today is reminiscent of the historic trails that the Buffalo Soldiers used for transport so many years ago. Visit to enjoy camping, fishing, swimming, paddling, and wildlife viewing.
