Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Trailway
Forts Trail Region
The area around Lake Mineral Wells State Park, on the edge of the North Texas frontier, relied on Buffalo Soldiers for security back in the late 19th century. Troopers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry, riding out from Fort Richardson and Fort Griffin, patrolled this region to protect settlers and travelers from Comanche and Kiowa raids. As you hike or bike the trails today, or explore Penitentiary Hollow, think about these soldiers who helped make the area safe for settlement and its later boom as a health spa.
