The vast plains around Lake Colorado City State Park in West Texas were once frequented by Buffalo Soldiers, particularly the 10th Cavalry out of Fort Concho, which campaigned extensively here in the late 19th century. Soldiers rode these dry lands to guard westward trails and early settlements, map the area, find scarce water, and deal with Comanche and Kiowa groups who challenged the frontier's spread. As you enjoy the park's modern lakeside setting, imagine the grit of the troopers who crossed these plains, always vigilant and persevering through tough conditions. In addition to playing on the lake, set up camp, share a picnic, look for a geocache, or watch for wildlife.
