With its white adobe walls, historic aura, and refreshing pool, Indian Lodge is a welcome oasis in West Texas. The lodge, tucked into Davis Mountains State Park, is part of a landscape that was deeply connected to the Buffalo Soldiers at nearby Fort Davis—a major post for the 9th and 10th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantry from 1867 to 1885. While the CCC built the lodge later, the land around it was vital for the fort: soldiers patrolled here, grazed animals, and used the mountains as a base for campaigns against Apache groups. Staying at Indian Lodge today, remember that its peaceful vibe is connected to the hard service that made this beautiful mountain region accessible.
