Adobe Walls, just north of the Canadian River in Hutchinson County, was home to several trading posts, beginning in 1843. In 1845, a large, fort-like adobe structure replaced the original log cabin, providing better protection during frontier skirmishes, but was abandoned by 1849. By the time of the 1874 battle, Fort Adobe lay in ruins, given over to a small hunting and trading settlement nearby.
The Hutchinson County Historical Museum in Borger includes a replica of a buffalo hunters’ trading post like the one in Adobe Walls, the site of the first salvo of the Red River War.
