SPANNING THE AGES

Like all counties in Texas, Hutchinson County takes pride in its robust history. And Hutchinson has a big story to tell, one that spans the ages. Fortunately, the entire story and its artifacts can be found under one roof – the Hutchinson County Historical Museum. Hutchinson heritage begins millions of years ago courtesy of the Permian Period, and the museum presents a diverse fossil record.time The region was also home to the Panhandle Pueblo Culture, a civilization that flourished during the first millennium A.D. The museum showcases remnants from this culture including projectile points and partially restored ceramics. The Spanish explorer Coronado and his men arrived in the region over 500 years ago. Settlers and the American cavalry, arriving centuries later, made a stand here against American Indian tribes at nearby Adobe Walls. The eventual relocation of these tribes to Oklahoma reservatioin lands made way for the rise of farming, ranching, and oil and gas development, all interpreted by the museum’s many exhibits.Located in the community of Borger, the museum hosts frequent events like book signings, special exhibits, celebrations, and musical fundraisers in addition to archiving the heritage of Hutchinson County.
