Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site
Hueco Tanks, with its rock hideouts and life-saving water, was an important spot for Buffalo Soldiers patrolling the far West Texas desert from Fort Bliss in the late 1800s. Troopers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry along with Tonkawa and Tigua scouts knew Hueco Tanks was key for survival. Soldiers could keep an eye on ancient trails used by everyone from Native Americans to the military. As you explore the unique rock art and natural cisterns, imagine the African American soldiers who played a big part in making this challenging borderland safer. Enjoy hiking, rock climbing, camping, bird watching, nature and history study, picnicking, and stargazing in this special place.
