Hill Country State Natural Area
The wild, rugged land of Hill Country State Natural Area is an example of the rugged country that Buffalo Soldiers, like the 9th Cavalry and the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts, patrolled in the late 1800s. Riding out from forts like Fort Clark and Fort Inge, they navigated these wild hills and canyons to guard the frontier, stop raiding parties, and keep settlers and travelers safe in the western Hill Country. Today, Hill Country State Natural Area offers primitive camping, backpacking, nature-watching and multiuse trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. On those trails, you’re treading the same ground that tested the soldiers’ endurance and showcased their incredible tracking skills.
