Founded in 1837 by brothers William and John Frels, Frelsburg is one of the earliest German-Texan communities. Heinsohn’s Country Store is a time capsule of early German-Texan trading and commerce.
While you’re in town, visit two historic churches – both of which served Frelsburg’s early German residents. The wood-frame building of Trinity Lutheran Church was erected in 1855 along what is now FM 1294. Though in a newer building, Trinity’s congregation still worships on the same site. A worshipping community has existed at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church since 1843, when the church was established to serve the growing German-Catholic town. The current church building has been in use since 1928.
