Gunter Hotel

The Gunter Hotel is historically significant for a number of reasons, but for music fans the most important reason is that Blues legend Robert Johnson made his famous November 1936 recording in room 414—the only surviving recordings of his work. Rock musician John Mellencamp was so impressed by this that he recorded an album in the same room 73 years later.
Following the completion of an eight million dollar renovation in 1999, Gunter Hotel staff released helium balloons with a key to the hotel’s front door attached, symbolizing that the Gunter Hotel would continue to provide uninterrupted service. Today, the Gunter Hotel offers 322 rooms and continues to be a popular destination for San Antonio visitors.
