Guadalupe River State Park
The beautiful Guadalupe River valley, now home to Guadalupe River State Park, was the Texas Hill Country frontier where Buffalo Soldiers—especially from the 9th Cavalry who used Camp Verde and old Fort Martin Scott as staging outposts—helped keep the peace in the late 19th century. They protected settlers along the river, kept mail routes safe, and patrolled the hills against raids and general lawlessness. As you enjoy the flowing river and scenic beauty of Guadalupe River State Park, picture the soldiers whose efforts allowed communities here to put down roots and thrive. Today you can set up camp under live oak trees, spend an afternoon paddling the river, or try your luck fishing along the four miles of river frontage.
