Historic Goliad, preserved at Goliad State Park & Historic Site, saw the presence of Buffalo Soldiers, especially from the 9th Cavalry, during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War. Here in South Texas, their job shifted from fighting on the western frontier to upholding federal law, protecting the rights of newly freed African Americans, ensuring fair elections, and keeping the peace in the San Antonio River valley. Connect with this later chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers’ story when you visit Goliad’s mission and other early Texas historic sites. Explore the hike and bike trails, set up camp, enjoy a picnic, or fish or paddle the San Antonio River.
