The Franklin Mountains provided the backdrop for Buffalo Soldier action in El Paso, as all four famed regiments, the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry, were stationed at Fort Bliss over the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their responsibilities here included securing the vital El Paso del Norte pass, protecting mail and stagecoach routes, patrolling for Apache groups in the desert and mountains, and keeping an eye on the international border. When you visit Franklin Mountains State Park, you're in the shadow of the peaks these troopers knew well amid a landscape that shaped their work. Explore over 100 miles of trails on foot or bike or camp overnight to enjoy a spectacular desert sunrise.
