The US Army Medical Museum tells the story of the Army Medical Corps, from 1775 to the present. Part history museum, part science museum, it showcases exhibits covering the 200+ year history of US Army Medical Department. Dr. William Fitzsimons, the first American officer killed in the Great War, is featured in the museum. You can see his personal effects that were in his possession when he was killed.

While visiting Fort Sam Houston, you can also visit the Gift Chapel, the site of the World War I court-martial following the Houston Riot of 1917.

Also nearby, at San Antonio National Cemetery, you can visit the grave of Private David B. Barkley-Cantú, one of only four Medal of Honor recipients from the First World War. (Note that the grave is listed at the cemetery as it appears on the headstone: “David B. Barkley”)

Fort Sam Houston is an active military base and access is limited. Please call the US Army Medical Museum for detailed visitation instructions. Visitors typically gain access same day.
