Fort Richardson State Park
Fort Richardson State Park preserves a key U.S. Army post on the North Texas frontier where Buffalo Soldier regiments (the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th infantry) served during the intense post-Civil War era. From this fort, they launched patrols and major expeditions to counter Kiowa and Comanche raids and protect settlers and important trails like the Butterfield Overland Trail. The units were also deeply involved in campaigns like the 1874 to 1875 Red River War. Exploring the original fort buildings and grounds today helps you imagine the soldiers, including the Buffalo Soldiers, who lived and worked here. You can also stay at one of the park’s cabins and campsites, and see the scenic countryside on foot, bike, or horseback.
