Established in 1879 near present-day Marathon, Camp Peña Colorado served as a remote U.S. Army post protecting travelers and settlers in the Trans-Pecos. From 1884 to 1885, the 10th U.S. Cavalry—known as the Buffalo Soldiers—was stationed here to patrol the rugged borderlands and maintain peace in the region. The post was abandoned in 1893 as frontier conflicts subsided. Today, the site lies on the historic Post Ranch, where the surrounding land and springs remain a reminder of the soldiers who once served at this desert outpost.
