Fort McKavett State Historic Site
Fort McKavett was established to protect travelers heading west to California. It was abandoned twice before being reoccupied after the Civil War. In 1869, the 24th Infantry Regiment was organized here through the consolidation of the 38th and 41st Infantry Regiments. Buffalo Soldiers stationed at the fort, including members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, participated in campaigns against Native American tribes, protected settlers, and maintained order on the frontier. Today, Fort McKavett is a state historic site where the stories of these soldiers are preserved and shared through programs by the Texas Historical Commission and the Buffalo Soldiers Program of Texas Parks and Wildlife.
