Fort Lancaster and Battlefield State Historic Site
Along the arid Pecos River Valley stand the ruins of Fort Lancaster and Battlefield State Historic Site. Built in 1855 to protect travelers on the San Antonio–El Paso Road, the fort served as an important way station for those heading to California. After the Civil War, the Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th Cavalry reoccupied and rebuilt the post, which had been abandoned and damaged. In December 1867, Company K of the 9th Cavalry repelled an attack by approximately 1,000 Kickapoo and their allies in what became known as the Battle of Fort Lancaster. This was the first recorded battle in which Buffalo Soldiers engaged in Texas. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and learn about the site’s history, including this early moment of African American military service on the frontier.
