This memorial depicts two American soldiers - one Army, one Navy - standing on either side of a German artillery piece.

The statue on the right is called “The Spirit of the American Doughboy”, a nickname for American soldiers in World War I. The soldier holds a rifle in his left hand, and a grenade in his right hand. At his feet lay shattered tree stumps and barbed wire. This cast statue adorns city halls and courthouses throughout America, becoming popular from 1920 to 1940.

The statue on the right is called “Spirit of the American Navy”, designed by the same sculptor. Only seven remain in public locations today.

The statues were generally cast in bronze; this Navy statue is the only known version carved from stone.
