Estero Llano Grande State Park
Tropical Trail Region
The Lower Rio Grande Valley, with its unique wetlands and thornscrub, was a key area for Buffalo Soldiers patrolling out of posts like Fort Brown from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Troopers protected young farming communities and trade routes from border raids and bandits while coping with the special challenges of the Rio Grande frontier. This area, including Estero Llano Grande State Park, is now a world-renowned birding destination.
