Devils River State Natural Area
Wild country like the beautiful canyons of today’s Devils River State Natural Area were a tough beat for Buffalo Soldiers and Seminole Negro Indian Scouts from nearby Fort Clark in the late 1800s. These soldiers took on dangerous work tracking Apache, Kickapoo, and outlaws through the rugged landscape. They conducted vital scouting missions and tried to secure this remote and challenging frontier. Imagine the extraordinary tracking skills and sheer grit needed to survive and operate in this untamed land when you explore the park’s dramatic beauty. Enjoy the turquoise waters of one of the most pristine rivers in Texas, and the brilliance of the night sky at this International Dark Sky Sanctuary.
