Blanco Canyon lies to the northeast of Crosbyton, and it is here the Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie and Comanche leader Quanah Parker engaged in one of the most decisive battles in the U.S. cavalry’s campaigns against the Comanches in 1871. Although Mackenzie deemed it unsuccessful, the lessons learned about Plains Indian warfare would prove valuable three years later during the Red River War. Listen to the story here.

The Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum chronicles Mackenzie’s career and holds 23,000 Indian artifacts collected by Parker’s cousin.
