The Crighton Theatre, built in 1934 for vaudeville productions and then converted to a movie theater, now stages live local and touring shows. It is home to Stage Right Productions, Montgomery County Performing Arts Society, and Sounds of Texas Music Series.
With civic pride, Conroe Mayor Harry M. Crighton used his money from his oil business to realize hisdesire for a grand theater. In 1934 he hired architect Blum E. Hester to build a movie palace similar to the great Majestic Theatre in Houston using native stone like that of the capitol in Austin.
