Copper Breaks State Park, with its striking red-rock canyons, was part of the challenging terrain patrolled by Buffalo Soldiers, especially the 10th Cavalry, during the late 1800s. Operating out of forts like Fort Sill and Fort Richardson, these soldiers pursued Kiowa and Comanche bands across the rolling plains, working to secure the North Texas frontier. When you camp or hike in the park, reflect on the determination of the troopers who navigated these lands and helped bring peace to the region. Be sure to reserve a campsite to enjoy the brilliance of the night sky at this designated International Dark Sky Park.
