LUNCH WITH A SIDE ORDER OF HISTORY
Despite the fact that the historic home of the late San Marcos resident Charles S. Cock is over one hundred years old you can still get a good hot lunch from its kitchen almost every Friday! Although it won’t be Mrs. Charles Cock cooking and serving (the original family has long passed on), the meal will probably include familiar homestyle favorites like chicken and biscuits, warm potato soup, or cheesy lasagna. Known locally as the “Cottage Kitchen”, members of the Heritage Association of San Marcos have been dishing up Friday’s lunchtime meal at the Charles S. Cock House and Museum for over twenty years. Diners sit among authentic furnishings, a collection of fine primitive antiques, housed in a vernacular Greek Revival structure of native stone erected in 1867, making the home the oldest surviving residential structure in San Marcos. Nearby, visitors may visit the historic Merriman Cabin, the Dr. Gwen K. Smith Fountain, and access to San Marcos’ own River Walk via the Juan Veramendi Plaza.
