Castolon Historic District, Big Bend National Park
Mountain Trail Region
AMITY ALONG THE BORDER
The Castolon Historic District in Big Bend National Park tells the story of an early-20th Century farming and trading community and U.S. Army outpost in southwestern Brewster County. It’s accessible from the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. Here you’ll learn that in 1901, decades before the park was established, a Mexican farmer named Cipriano Hernandez bought land and grew crops in the Rio Grande floodplain downstream from Santa Elena Canyon.
