Casa Navarro State Historic Site
In the heart of San Antonio stands the home of José Antonio Navarro, a Tejano statesperson whose fervor for Texas independence and civic equality did not fully extend to African Americans, since he was complicit with the early republic’s slaveholding norms. Decades later, Buffalo Soldiers, Black cavalrymen and infantry soldiers, rode along the same old Spanish and colonial-era roads that thread the city, including sections of El Camino Real and the Old Spanish Trail. Their composed march through this landscape, forging a better path under the flag of the reunited nation, offers a counter-story to the contradictions of Navarro’s time. The two legacies, one of political advocacy with blind spots and the other of disciplined military dignity, meet at the crossroads of this historic city.
