Carnegie Public Library, Gainesville
This building is one of 32 public libraries built in Texas with funding provided by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. As a symbol of learning and progress, the 1903 restrained Renaissance Revival-style library served an important civic function.
Just as Carnegie intended, the community stepped up to provide a place of enlightenment for its citizens. The XLI Club, a local women’s organization, raised funds to purchase the lot, and operated the library until the mid-1920s. The library moved in 1963, and since 1979, it has been home to the Butterfield Stage Players, an amateur theatre group.
Visitors can still catch shows held in the Butterfield Stage Theater.
