Always a hub for socializing and entertainment, Denton’s square features two historic district icons.
Opera House, 200 N. Locust St.
Among the most distinctive buildings is the Wright Opera House, built in 1899 - using the bricks of a former courthouse - for a total of $25,000. In recent years, it was sold to a private entity who has invested many times its original price to preserve it, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St.
On the other side of the square, the Campus Theater was built in 1949 to cater to the two colleges. It was purchased in the 1990s by the Greater Denton Arts Council and restored. It provides an excellent example of an “electric tiara” theater marquee.
